“On a bus ride to Belmopan, Belize I sat next to a young woman from the states who was serving in the peace corps. She shared with me that she had received her nursing degree a year or two ago in the hopes of helping others and making a difference in the world. Yet for whatever reason she said working at the hospital felt more like a job and less like a life changing experience. She almost considered quitting nursing when a recruiter came to the hospital looking for people to join the peace corps. After several days debating it, she called the recruiter and joined.
Since then she has been serving the people in Belize by educating them about the dangers of diabetes and unhealthy living. When not teaching classes she is visiting sick people in remote villages, attending to their needs by providing physicals and teaching family members how to take care of them. She feels she has literally changed the lives of entire villages by teaching them how to care for each other. The world is full of people in need and they just need someone willing to take a chance and apply their skills in different ways.”
