“Do you know what gets me going to the Danube Delta every year?
I am not the only one in love with the myriad of canals in southeastern Romania. So are birds, otters, wild boars, or turtles. Nature’s vibe is heightened where the Mighty Danube flows into the Black Sea via three branches.
Urban legends speak of inaccessibility and high prices.
However, you need only a car, a kayak, a paddle, a PFD, a tent, a sleeping bag, and your permits – purchasable online.
Also, remember this name: ‘Tulcea’; it is the largest city in the area and the biggest hub when planning your adventure through the meanders. Or craving a steamy slice of Dobrujan pie after your first ferry crossing, from Brăila or Galaţi. There are also bridges connecting the wetlands to the rest of Romania, but I always choose rudimentary over modern.
One last suggestion? A friend to take along. Someone to share sights and sounds with will make your journey complete.”
